The Bookfinger Bibliography
by Jessica Amanda Salmonson
In addition to the corrected & enlarged Archive presentation of my 1995 article On Bookfinger, I am including here a bibliography of titles issued by that publisher. Although I did have Joseph Amadeo check the bibliography for omissions or errors, his memory was imperfect, & I have since stumbled onto titles he neglected to note. I hope the list is now complete. The only previously published Bookfinger bibliography included books such as Rohmer's Moon of Madness not issued by Bookfinger, & excluded others that were. I have physically seen all the books here listed excepting only the G. G. Rice nonfiction title, so there are no phantoms in this bibliography.
Dates are those which appear in the books, though a few were actually sent to press one year or even two after amended title & copyright page were readied. All were restricted to 1000 copies; some actually had fewer delivered. All are in plain black cloth though variants (not seen) are reported. Most have the title goldstamped on spine only, though Sins of Séverac Bablon additionally has uninked embossed title on front board. All say "Bookfinger" at heal of spine, except Séverac Bablon which mistakenly says "Cassell" on the majority (not all) of copies seen (the error having been corrected partway through the print run). I have attempted to ascertain & note which are American first editions.
Berle, Lina Wright. George Eliot and Thomas Hardy, A Contrast. 1969. Facsimile of 1917 Mitchell Kennerley 1st. A ringer on the list, the only "lit-crit" volume from Bookfinger, & one of only two titles outside the arena of fantasy and/or detective fiction (though one cannot argue against Hardy being within the ghost story genre).
Brooks, Noah. Tales Of The Maine Coast. 1980. Facsimile of 1894 1st. A regional collection including a few good ghost stories.
