  • Nights in Town: A London Autobiography (London: George Allen & Unwin, 1915), in the US as Nights in London (New York: Henry Holt, 1915). A mixture of essays, poems, & stories of working-class London by night, likened by contemporary critics to Edgar Poe. Two "chapters" are unquestionably stand-alone short stories:
    "A Basher's Night"
    "A Down-stream Night"

       

  • Limehouse Nights (London: Richards, 1916; New York: McBride, 1917). A later printing, Limehouse Nights Illustrated by Mahlon Blaine (New York: McBride, 1926) should be considered the definitive edition for the sake of Blaine's artwork. Selections from Limehouse Nights were reissued are Broken Blossoms (Richards, 1920) and In Chinatown (Richards, 1921)
