Violet Books

Persian illustrations for
The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

"And those who husbanded the Golden Grain"
Published by H. Kashani in Tehran, Iran, in 1951 was a spiral-bound book titled Greetings & Best Wishes for Christmas & the New Year on the outside, but within presented both French, German & English language texts for the Rubaiyat with a full color illustration for ever quatrain. Clearly a book for tourists, there is no other date on these marvelous illustrations, though I must presume they are very much earlier than 1951.

"I sometimes think that never blows so red
The Rose as where some buried Caesar bled."

"But still the Vine her ancient Ruby yields."

"This I know: Whether the one True Light
Kindle to Love, or Wrath consume me quite,
One Glimpse of It within the Tavern caught
Better than in the Temple lost outright."
