Pirate Plunder #1:
Bluebeard & the Spanish Witch

Spanish Witch

James E. Allen's illustration for "Bluebeard & the Spanish Witch" is from Good Housekeeping December 1932

The Story: The handsome Eduard de Barbe-Bleue, "Bluebeard," lived in a tower high on the island of St. Thomas. Quite a ladies' man, he had charmed many of the local women. On a voyage to South America, he captured a Spanish Caravel & all its treasure, including the beautiful Senorita Mercedes. He kept her, beloved but inviolate, at his tower. While he was away, she discovered his treasure chests, as well as many love-letters from the town's ladies. Furious, she invited them all to the tower & let them pillage his gold & jewels. In return, the jealous women accused her of witchcraft, & she was to be burnt at the stake -- but was saved at the last moment by Edouard's return.
