Pirate Plunder #4:
The Dragon Comes

A colorful, picturesque page from
the life of one of England's greatest heroes.

Sir Francis

James E. Allen's illustration for "The Dragon Comes" in Good Housekeeping October 1933

The Story: Sir Francis Drake ("The Dragon") & his crew prepared to attack & plunder Santo Domingo. Aboard his ship was Suzanne, a young woman disguised as a boy, determined to get into the city to rescue her kidnapped mother. Drake anchored his fleet just beyond the reach of the fortress's cannons & pretended to get ready for battle. At night, he & his crew rowed silently ashore & conquered the sleeping city. They sacked the fortress & the great Cathedral, taking booty of enormous value. Suzanne's treacherous mother stayed, having joined the enemy. The girl sailed back to England, where she married one of Drake's sailors.

(Note: While visiting the Cathedral at Santo Domingo, Emma-Lindsay was privileged to see & plunge her hands into some of the great treasure of gold & jewels that had been saved from "The Dragon.")
