Cynthia Cynthia Stockley:
Romancer of the Dark Continent

editors' introduction to a novel
as first serialized in Nash's Magazine

with portrait by Hugh Cecil

If anyone has crowded existence with adventure & romance, it is Cynthia Stockley, who has done more to portray the strange & terrible charm of the Dark Continent than any other novelist. She writes from intimate knowledge, for, having spent her early life in this country, it is to her as an open book. She knows the secrets of the Veld better than anyone in the world -- so well, indeed, that she is sometimes called "The Tiger."

Her career has been a singularly interesting & eventful one, journalism & the stage having claimed her at different periods. She has a passion for travelling, has toured in America, & lived in many lands. But it is as a novelist that she wont through to fame, her first book, Virginia of the Rhodesians, being followed by Poppy & The Claw. These last two achieved tremendous popularity, & it became evident at once that South Africa was to have a novelist who would do that wonderful country real justice. Out of the richness of her knowledge she writes with vivid realism & compelling charm.

Her new novel Panjola, which begins in this issue, is an even greater story than The Claw & Poppy. It is not merely a compelling human drama, but in Cynthia Stockley's own inimitable style it gives a vivid & realistic portrayal of life on the glamorous African Veld.

A story of love & gold & a woman's fight for a man's soul -- Panjola has the true romantic touch & will appeal to all lovers of stirring fiction. It holds one's interest to the very end, & is a fine example of those qualities which made made Cynthia Stockley's work famous throughout the English-speaking world.
