Edward Beverly Mann, son of a Methodist minister, was born in Hollis, Kansas, on January 31, 1902. He attended the University of Florida (1923-1927). He began his magazine writing career upon graduation & moving to New York City. His first novel was The Man from Texas (1931).

His most popular character was U.S. Marshal Jim Sinclair, called "The Whistler" appearing in Rustlers' Round-up (1935), El Sombra (1936) & The Whistler (1953). One of his best was The Comanche Kid (1937) which is simultaneously a fine detective tale. His last novel was a paperback original, The Avenger: Colt Crusade (1966). As a rugged sportsman, Mann was also a columnist for Field & Stream & edited gun magazines, including The American Rifleman. He was active in the National Rifle Association.

His commitment to the history of the west was fulfilled during his 1950s editing stint overseeing the University of New Mexico Press. When he died in 1989 he left his books & personal papers to the American Heritage Center at the University of Wyoming.
